Salvo (Horsham) Rifle Club

Welcome to the online home of Salvo (Horsham) Rifle Club - a club for those interested in both .22 and fullbore rifle. We shoot regularly at our .22 range in Horsham, and we also visit the National Shooting Centre at Bisley to shoot fullbore events.

We number around 35 members including ladies, gents and juniors who participate regularly in two main disciplines:

Prone rifle takes place on Tuesday evenings from 7pm. The discipline uses a bolt-action, single shot rifle with aperture sights. Each card displays 10 small targets, and you fire one shot at each of these targets from 25 yards. The discipline is shot from the prone (lying-down) position on the floor and you wear a special jacket, glove and sling to help support the rifle. This is the same style of shooting that is contested at the Summer Olympics.

Lightweight Sporting Rifle (LSR) takes place on Thursday evenings from 7pm. LSRs are semi-automatic or repeating rifles with 10-shot magazines and telescopic sights. The discipline is shot from the standing position at 20 yards and does not use special clothing. Each round consists of 3 targets with 10 shots on each, giving a score out of 300 (yes, LSR shooters get through a lot more ammo than prone shooters!).

We shoot both disciplines in competition and competitive participation is encouraged and nurtured. However, members are equally free to shoot purely for the love of the sport, and competitive participation is by no means compulsory.
As well as shooting competitions from our home range, we organise trips to Bisley as interest demands to both compete in external events, and to practice.

Costs

As hobbies go, shooting at Salvo is relatively inexpensive. There is a small annual fee payable in January, which is pro-rated for people joining later during the year.

The rest of our costs are recovered via the ammunition we sell to members on site.

Ammunition costs about £3.50 -£6.00 per box of 50.

Equipment

We provide clothing, safety glasses, ear defenders and have a selection of club rifles for the use of members without their own, including bolt-actions for Prone, and semi-auto and underlever action rifles for LSR. We can provide secure storage for members' guns if required.

Joining Procedure

Before you can shoot for the first time, you must be a member of the Holbrook Club and fill in a SALVO application form. This is available from the Rifle Range or Holbrook Reception and covers all disciplines. Once we receive confirmation from the Police that you have no criminal record that would bar you from using or possessing firearms, you can attend as a provisional member. Training on safety, protocol and gun usage will be given. Usually you remain provisional for 6 months and then become a full member. Once you've reached this stage you may apply for a firearm certificate and buy your own firearms - you CAN - you don't have to. We have many members who only shoot club guns.
